Is my vag normal??

Vagina owners, ASSEMBLE! I know there’s a question you’ve all asked yourselves at one point– maybe during a curious exploration down there or in the middle of sex or while chomping on your breakfast: IS MY VAGINA NORMAL? A perfectly normal question that can fill us with so much dread because how do we tell? It’s not like you can ask one of your friends to check or to show you theirs so you can compare (if you can, keep that friend forever) and if you do happen to see another vagina, how do you know if their vagina is normal?? Wow, I’m panicking just writing about this because as a vagina owner myself, I know the challenge that this question poses. And that’s why, I’m here to tell you something extremely important, wait I need to shout it in all caps and all bold because it is so so so important for you to know…

…THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A NORMAL VULVA! ALL VULVAS ARE UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL!

Phew. Okay. Now you must be wondering why I said vulva and not vagina. Well, it’s because when we think we’re looking at our vagina, what we’re really looking at is our vulva. The vulva is everything outside that is visible–the labia (lips), the clitoris, the opening to your vagina, etc. The vagina is actually what’s inside, what cannot be easily seen! So when you’re asking if you’re vagina is normal, you’re actually asking if your vulva normal…and just to remind you:

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A NORMAL VULVA! ALL VULVAS ARE AS UNIQUE AS FACES!

If all it took was someone yelling this at you to calm your anxieties, you wouldn’t be here googling this question and reading this blog. So let’s stop beating around the bush, and let's get down to business. Vulva business.

THE MANY KINDS OF LABIA

The first thing you’ll notice about your vulva is your labia majora, they’re the fleshy outer lips! The inner lips–the labia minora–are the ones that lead to your vaginal opening. There are many, MANY different ways that your labia can look and we’re going to explore some more common ones but keep in mind, that even if your labia shape is similar to any of these it won’t be the exact same because each labia, AND WE MEAN EACH, is so unique, almost like a thumbprint!

Symmetrical/asymmetrical: Symmetrical labia, is just as the name suggests. The labia majora (outer lip) and libia minora (inner lip) are both symmetrical to each other, evenly shaped and sized. Asymmetrical? Well, just the opposite of that! One labia, inner or outer, might be bigger, thicker or longer than their counterpart giving the vulva a little more of an uneven shape.

Prominent inner/outer lips: Listen, those inner lips? They’re often the stars of the show, peeking out or even making a bold, proud statement. So don’t stress if they’re hanging out. And sometimes, it's your outer lips stealing the spotlight and if that’s the case, they tend to sit lower on your vulva, rocking all kinds of looks—from thick and juicy to thin and breezy, or something right in between. It doesn’t matter which one is more prominent, they’re just labia labia-ing!

Long inner/outer lips: One common way in which either your labia majora or labia minora can establish their prominence is through length. If your inner lips are in their “long, dangling” era, they might hang an inch—or more—past the outer lips, even peeking out of your underwear to say hello. You might notice a few extra folds or some extra skin, too. For outer lips that are longer, they’re often larger, with a thin, loose vibe. And yes, they might also make a little cameo outside your undies, giving those inner lips a bit more airtime!

Small open/closed outer lips: We’ve spoken a lot about prominent outer lips but now it’s time to shed some light and spend some time with small outer lips! As is once again, in the name, small outer lips mean the lips are petite. But there’s a more important distinction here–whether they’re closed or open! When they’re open, the outer lips are just chilling and laying flat against your pubic bone, separated a bit, flashing your inner lips a little! When they’re closed, the outer lips completely cover the inner lips. Now, you might be most familiar with the closed outer lips because they’re the shape most seen in porn and therefore most desired but here’s a lil secret that shouldn’t be a secret anymore…closed outer lips vulvas are the least common!!

Now we can go on and on about more kinds of labia–from curved outer lips and visible inner lips–but it’s safe to say that the most important thing has been covered: that labia come in all shapes, in all sizes, in all positions, in all variations! As long as they don’t cause you any physical pain, you don’t need to worry one damn bit about how they look!

BEYOND THE LABIA

It’s not just the labia that comes in an array, every other part of your vulva does too! Some people have a big clitoris, some have small ones. Some clitoris is tucked under a clitoral hood, some stick out and proud! Also, some people can have a narrow vaginal opening, some people can have larger ones. Then there’s the matter of the hymen! Most vulva owners have this thin tissue covering part of their vaginal opening, called the hymen. Some have hymens that cover most of the opening, while others hardly have one at all. Everyday activities—like riding a bike, playing sports, or using tampons—can stretch it out. And yes, penis-in-vagina sex can also change the hymen. And lastly, colour! Vulvas come in all kinds of skin colours–from rich browns and purples to tans and soft pinks–and they come in all kinds of textures and also pubic hair!

OWNING YOUR VULVA

It’s common knowledge that the beauty industry will do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to make you feel insecure about your body and make you want to change it! Yes, that includes the not often seen vulva!! Just look at how long it took for us to accept that pubic hair is okay! But that’s the thing, my dear vulva owners, just like every silly, made-up beauty standard, anyone who tells you that your vulva should “look” or “feel” a certain way can kindly buzz off. Your vulva is unique, and as long as you’re not feeling any discomfort or pain, it’s free to flaunt its own fabulousness. So own it, love it, and celebrate it! Your vulva is a beautiful part of you, and it deserves all the hype! And if you’re in the mood to celebrate your vulva, your vagina and yourself, look no further than our massagers–we have a whole range of designs for you to choose what works for your vagina the best but that’s not the best part. The best part is they’re ALL designed to make you feel so good, so confident and so at home in your pleasure and body that you’ll be owning your vulva in no time!
