Whenever we think of protection, condoms are usually the first thing that pops into our heads. But guess what? There’s a whole world of other options out there! I got curious about how they’d work, because quite frankly, I’ve also only and only used condoms. I wanted to know and understand these array of other options, for you and for me.
So, I decided to chat with some friends to see what they’ve tried and get you all the juicy deets. From pills to IUDs, their stories might just help you find your perfect match. Let’s dive into their experiences and discover the best fit for you!
Geetika, 37, Condoms :
"We chose condoms because well, the first time I got busy, that was the only option I knew. They were easy to grab and what all of our friends used too. No prescription needed either, which was great back when I was 20.
We didn’t have enough sex ed, or the access to resources on the internet at the tip of our fingers. It took us a few mishaps where our condom broke or we struggled with keeping it on properly. After some trial and error though, it's been smooth sailing. Now? Total pro!”
Riya, 27, Oral Contraceptive Pills -
"I started taking the combined oral pill (yep, the one with both estrogen and progesterone) in college. It totally regulated my periods and even cleared up my acne – major win!
But, ngl, I did get mood swings and my weight was a bit all over the place. Plus, sometimes I felt a bit queasy after taking it. Still, having control over my reproductive health and a regular cycle is worth it. The perks definitely outweigh the little hiccups for me."
So, you probably know about these two usual ways of pregnancy away. But let’s dive into something a bit off the beaten path (thanks to the lack of sex ed around here) - IUDs. What are IUDs, you ask? They’re tiny contraceptive devices that are fitted inside your uterus to block pregnancies and more than 99 percent effective!
There are two types:
First up, the Copper IUD. This bad boy uses copper to keep sperm at bay and that’s how it stops an egg from setting up shop. This means that it’s a zero hormones involved solution. And you know the best thing about this contraceptive, it can last up to 10 years! Here's what Isha has to say about her experience:
"After dealing with the side effects of hormonal contraceptives, I really wanted to switch to a non-hormonal option. My gynac suggested the copper IUD - and that’s how I decided to give it a shot.
Getting it put in was pretty uncomfortable and a bit painful, with some cramping for a few days after. My periods got way heavier and more painful at first, which was a struggle. But after about six months, my body adjusted, and the cramping and heavy bleeding became way more chill.
My fav bit is the 'set it and forget it' deal. Bye to daily pills or frequent appointments.
Even though the initial adjustment was tough, I now love the convenience and reliability of the copper IUD. It gives me peace of mind knowing I've got solid birth control without messing with my hormones."
Now, what’s the Hormonal IUD? This little device actually releases progestin, a synthetic version of progesterone. Now, you might wonder, why go hormonal if the copper one exists? Well, it actually helps with other hormonal issues like heavy periods and cramps. I chatted with Shilpa, who’s been rocking the hormonal IUD for 3 years now.
"My gynac suggested the hormonal IUD for me. The insertion process was uncomfortable, and I did have some spotting during the first few months, but that eventually calmed down.
The hormonal IUD releases a small amount of progestogen directly into the uterus. It made my periods super light and practically wiped out my cramps. Within a few months, my periods were almost non-existent, which was a huge relief compared to my old heavy flow. Another benefit is also that I haven't experienced any mood swings or weight gain I had with oral contraceptives.
It's awesome not having to think about contraception every day, and the reduced period symptoms have been a total game-changer for my quality of life."
Girlies, I hope my chats with other women have helped you figure out which contraceptive might be your vibe. But always remember to check with your gynac before trying anything new, especially hormonal. Our bodies are similar yet so different - you never know how something hormonal might affect you.
Stay informed, stay safe, and do what feels right for your body. You've got this!
